What is a DSG Girl?

What is a DSG Girl?

“We are passionate about empowering girls with the competencies and character to meet the challenges, responsibilities, obstacles and opportunities they may encounter as 21st Century women, but also to pursue their dreams and contribute as citizens of the local and global communities” – Jannie de Villiers

She listens to others with an open heart, allowing her to learn, understand and connect with those who have different lived experiences. She realises her fallibility, is willing to try new things and explore the unknown. She has discovered that an open mind is a direct path to a fuller, richer life – full of positivity and endless opportunities.

She takes risks and dares to try new things. When she stumbles, she does not see it as a failure, but rather an opportunity to learn and grow. The supportive environment gives her confidence and a positive outlook, even when things don’t go as planned, enabling her to dust herself off and try again – never alone, always with the sisterhood, at the side-lines, cheering her name.

At DSG, we celebrate what sets us apart. We teach our girls that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a clear path to self-love. This gives our girls the tools to attract experiences and opportunities that are meaningful to them. It allows for richer connections with others and brings with it a feeling of pure joy and freedom, that you get from living your truth fearlessly and passionately, by being 100 percent authentic, 100 percent of the time.

Cultivating a culture of kindness is of the utmost importance at DSG. Girls learn how showing warmth, love and generosity towards others is two-fold, it not only has a tremendous impact on those around her, but also serves to bolster her own happiness and well-being. In order for an eco-system like the DSG’s to thrive, the consideration and awareness of others is essential. DSG is passionate about community engagement, girls get the opportunity to see first-hand the effects of their kindness and experience the power of giving selflessly.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather having the resolve to face one’s fears head on. At DSG we encourage girls to use their voice, stand up for what they believe in, challenge, debate and question. We want the girls to actively participate and engage. Tough situations do arise and we strive to equip our girls with the skills – not to avoid these moments, but to be present, to learn from them, and ultimately grow into strong young women.

One of the greatest gifts we can impart in our girls is a curious mind with a love of learning. A desire to learn is critical for success in the fast paced, ever-changing environment we now live in. Instead of fearing the unknown, an enquiring mindset is rich with interest and excitement. It makes one enthusiastic and open to change and discovery- providing the invaluable toolkit that allows one to see obstacles as opportunities and another chance to grow and learn.

What is at the heart of our school and always has been is our people, the sisterhood and ‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”. In times of crisis, never has our light shone so brightly. Because of ‘our people’ from our quick-thinking and compassionate leadership team and the dedicated staff, to the vested interest and care of our Old Girls and parents, we have navigated our way through some incredibly rocky terrain and come out the other side, more determined and resilient than ever.
