Makhanda

Makhanda

The small town of Makhanda (Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape is the home of DSG. Its wide streets, beautiful architecture and majestic cathedral embody the deep sense of history and cultural significance of this town.

Makhanda (Grahamstown) is known as the ‘City of Saints’ because of the many churches in the town, which lend a certain dignity to the ambience. However, during the academic year, this gravitas is lightened by an energy and vigour sparked by the students who attend Rhodes University and the town’s many schools.

There are many benefits to attending a school in a small town:

  • It is small enough for the girls to enjoy an unparalleled degree of safe independence as the major shopping centre, the university and other schools are within easy walking distance of DSG.
  • It is only 60km away from the coast and is within easy reach of the Hogsback mountains and some of the best wildlife reserves in the country.

It is, however, not too small or remote and has a large academically based community:

  • The numerous schools in the town allow the fostering of healthy competition and co-operation.
  • Rhodes University is on our doorstep and there is close co-operation between the university and the school.
  • Makhanda (Grahamstown) is the home of the National Arts Festival and the Science Festival.

Port Elizabeth is easily accessible, so sporting fixtures against other schools, necessary visits to specialists and flights are easily arranged.
